ABOUT OPERATION: K.A.T.A.
Operation K.A.T.A. rises as a veteran-led movement forged to transform pain into purpose. It equips individuals with military-inspired tools for self-defense, post-traumatic growth, and personal empowerment through a living four-pillar cycle.
Knowledge lights the way, building foundational understanding of threats, criminology, and protection principles. Awareness scans every field, cultivating constant vigilance and early detection of danger. Tactics outsmart the chaos with practical techniques for response, de-escalation, and effective defense. Adaptability turns surprises and setbacks into strength and growth.
The living symbol of this doctrine is the K.A.T.A. Wolf — the grinning, blue-eyed tactical mascot who doesn’t just show up. He declares “OPERATION K.A.T.A. IN EFFECT” and “THIS MASCOT DOESN’T JUST SHOW UP — HE OWNS THE UNEXPECTED. EYES UP, GRINS ON.”
K.A.T.A. lives in the Life-Long Experience book series, including the flagship Enlighten self-defense title whose battle cry rings “Stay Alert, Stay Alive! You are worth protecting!” It lives in the rapid 60-Second Drills that build repeatable muscle memory. It lives in the expanding digital arsenal — from instant calm overrides and AI mentors to holographic workstations, PsyOps shields, community safety mapping systems, and recovery companions — all engineered to embed the pillars into daily life.
This is no theory. It is a combat loop: assess, act, adapt, repeat. Through practical strategies and a supportive community, Operation K.A.T.A. turns adversity into the fire that forges unbreakable strength.
Eyes up. Grins on. Own the unexpected.

CHARLES "SMITTYTRAIN" SMITH
Charles “Smittytrain” Smith is a U.S. Army Infantry Veteran, TBI survivor, and founder of Operation K.A.T.A. His story was forged in the fires of early loss and relentless adversity. Orphaned young after profound family tragedy, he endured multiple homes, rejection, and the grip of addiction before enlisting in the Army. As a Bradley Fighting Vehicle driver with Bravo Company, 2-12 Infantry, he served at Fort Carson, Guantanamo Bay’s Camp X-Ray riot control, and high-alert border patrols. A turret explosion left him with traumatic brain injury, while deeper wounds of Complex PTSD — rooted in childhood — remained undiagnosed for decades.
After service came the darkest chapter: cancer claiming loved ones, depression, a suicide attempt, and homelessness on Boston streets. In the depths, he discovered the path of recovery through martial arts, peer support, and the radical act of helping other veterans. Thirty-three years clean and sober, he turned survival into service.
From that crucible, Operation K.A.T.A. was born — a veteran-led movement built on the living four-pillar cycle of Knowledge, Awareness, Tactics, and Adaptability. This combat loop delivers practical, military-inspired tools for self-defense, situational awareness, and post-traumatic growth. As creator of the iconic K.A.T.A. Wolf — the grinning tactical mascot who declares “Eyes Up, Grins On” and “Own the Unexpected” — and author of the Life-Long Experience book series, including the flagship Enlighten self-defense title, Charles has transformed personal pain into a global mission of empowerment.
Today, from Plymouth County, Massachusetts, he continues building the resilience forge through books, rapid 60-second drills, and a growing digital arsenal of apps. He stands as living proof that adversity is not the end — it is the fire that forges unbreakable strength.
